Studying has long gone beyond notebooks and textbooks. A smartphone can replace a voice recorder, scanner, notes, and even a personal assistant. This is especially true for iPhones, which have many hidden tools that can help school and university students stay on top of the flow of information, save time, and study more effectively. Let’s talk about how to use your iPhone to get the most out of your studies.

External Microphone
When paired with AirPods, your smartphone can become an external microphone and transmit sound in high quality, even if you are sitting in the gallery. To do this, use the “Live Listen” option: place your smartphone closer to the speaker, activate it, and listen to the lecture through your headphones.

To activate it, follow the steps below:
- Bring up the Control Center by swiping down on the right side of the display.
- Hold your finger down for a couple of seconds to edit the layout of the icons and select Add Control.
- Enter the name of the desired option in the search bar — “Live Listen” — and select the corresponding icon.
- To enable the mode, simply tap the microphone icon on the panel.
This feature was originally designed for people with hearing impairments, but it can also be used for studying.
Copy Center in Your Smartphone
Live Text helps you save time rewriting notes. The mode recognizes text in different languages; just point your camera at it. Then you can copy it, send it via messengers, save it in documents, or translate it.
If you need to scan documents or save notes in PDF format, you don’t have to look for a copy center. You can simply use the Notes options. Go to a new entry, tap Attachments (the paperclip icon), and select Scan Documents. The scanner will recognize the text, crop it, and save it as a separate file.

Artificial Intelligence Features
While the previous features work on all current Apple smartphones, the conditions for built-in artificial intelligence are slightly different. Among the basic gadgets, Apple Intelligence is available on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e, and among the professional ones, on the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro/Pro Max. It will also appear in the series to be released in 2025.
How these iPhone options can be used by schoolchildren and students:
- edit and proofread text, setting the style and tone;
- summarize large materials and save time;
- record lectures in Notes as audio, transcribe them, and extract the main points.
AI is integrated with ChatGPT — you can ask questions without registering with the chatbot. However, Apple Intelligence does not yet work in all language versions: there is a list of available options on the Apple website.
Voiceovers
You can improve your foreign language skills by having your phone read aloud individual fragments or everything on the screen. The “Voice Content” option supports about 60 languages.

Here you can also change the voice, reading speed, and even highlight the text that is currently being read aloud. To start the mode, go to settings and enter the name of the option in the search bar.
Time Management
To prevent notifications from apps, chat discussions, and brand mailings from distracting you from your studies or leisure time, you can enable Focus mode. It does not display unnecessary notifications on the screen. However, you can add exceptions in the settings: for example, skip messages from parents or alarm clock calls.

To better understand how you spend your day, analyze your Screen Time statistics. It collects data on how many hours you spend in different apps. You can also set limits here—your phone will notify you when the time allocated for a specific program has ended.
Scanner for Mac
Your iPhone can easily replace a scanner for your Apple laptop. Just connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network, turn on Bluetooth, and open a standard app, such as Notes, Numbers, or Keynote. Select the “Insert from iPhone” and “Take Photo” options, and the phone’s camera will launch. The image you take will instantly appear on your laptop screen.

Important condition: Apple ID must be shared. This allows the system to recognize devices as “its own” and synchronize their operation.
Notes on Your Phone
If you left your notebook at home, you can quickly type text, draw simple diagrams, and even sketch shapes in the Notes app. To make circles and squares look neat, just draw them freehand and hold your finger on the screen—the system will automatically align the lines.

For more creative and large-scale tasks, Freeform is a good choice. Here, the iPhone’s features for students are a little broader: create large diagrams, develop mind maps, and design group projects.
Sum Up
All of the above iPhone life hacks for studying work on current Apple smartphones, except AI, which has special hardware requirements. Otherwise, you can manage your time, create new habits, and complete your routine faster by focusing on knowledge.
